Rising Nepal

About 25 years ago I lived in the region where this tiny land-locked country is located. When I returned years later, many things had changed. However, there are always small things that bring back nostalgia. The smell of the food, chaotic roads, and the typical way the Nepalese shake their heads are a few of them. The lively colors of Nepal are a contrast to the serenity of its culture and people. The cacophony of car and motorcycle horns on the busy and dusty roads of Kathmandu do not reflect the peaceful faces of the Nepalese I met. This paradox made me wonder what has obligated the country to undergo such a radical political – and social – change since the dawn of the 21st century. Nepal is no longer a kingdom and Hinduism is no longer the religion of the state. But it is still a country which continues to offer its beauty and uniqueness to the world. This, I know, is the foundation of a rising Nepal.

On the Way to Dampus

Dampus is a village commonly used as an alternative for the first stop of the Annapurna Base Camp trek. A view of the road and river leading to Pokhara.

Spiritual View

This cool man circled and, I believe, prayed around the World Peace Temple several times before finally taking a rest here. It was only the two of us. He was adamant that his purpose in life is as vast and calm as the view of the Phewa Lake, Pokhara. And mine, well… I can’t think past my lens.

Two Happy Men

These are the Sadhu monks. They could be the happiest and therefore most peaceful men on earth as smoking marijuana is part of their activities to reach “the other world”. I always wonder where the money I pay them to take their pictures will go.

New Life Awaits

The start of a Hindu high caste cremation at Pashupatinath Temple. This temple is one of the most respected Hindu temples in the world.

A New Day

“Good day, sir! Let me settle my things and later I can tell you about your fortune.” Among these ladies were fortunetellers resuming their activities after a long 40-day “fasting period”.

Sadhu’s Nest

On this rocky hill above the Bagmati River there are several caves inhabited by certain sadhu. I was told that a very strong sadhu lives here. He is so strong that he could lift heavy objects with his penis. Location: Pashupatinath Temple.

New Earth

Flying over around the Phewa Lake with a paraglide and saw this formation of the new continents of the new earth – continents of small hyacinths and colorful fisherman boats.
