Didi Budiardjo introduced the Sawunggaling art installation as part of his 25 years commemoration trilogy and Senayan City’s Fashion Nation 2015. Sawunggaling itself is a batik motif by Go Tik Swan, who was asked by the late President Soekarno to create something that can represent Indonesia as a whole. Didi, who believed that a culture would survive when it evolves over time, brought back the motif to be seen and interpreted through a different viewpoint by the present society. Set inside a makeshift triangular dark room, Didi and art director Felix Tjahyadi created a white gown adorned with video mapping of continuously evolving foliage-inspired patterns, representing the growth and innovation in fashion stemming from past aesthetics.
