Day Breaks – Norah Jones

It took 4 years to hear another excellent album from jazzy Mrs. Jones. Her sixth studio album released on Blue Note Records features nine new songs with singles Carry On, Flipside and Tragedy, includes three cover songs from her favorite artists. In this album, she calls back her lovely piano-driven sound as her early works, but with twists for freshing output.

From the first track Burn to the last song Fleurette Africaine, Norah took many different way of musical style for the album. She don’t mind playing some country-tinged tunes, then plays on the bluesy stuff, before she goes back to her jazzy root. Sometimes she just run the music in-between styles. Seems that she tries to put in diverse feels and sounds to each songs. She also made some splendid cover songs from folk-rock legend Neil Young (Don’t Be Denied), jazz pianist guru Horace Silvers (Peace) and master composer Duke Ellington (Fleurette Africaine), and invites along jazz musicians such as organist Lonnie Smith, saxophonist Wayne Shorter nd bassist John Patitucci for guest appearance in the album.

It is a balance of jazz and pop music, yet might attract more for non-jazz afficionados due to her interesting vocal-piano amusement. Certantly, this musical output makes you wanna listen to it over and over again.
