Celebrating ASEAN 50th Anniversary, the art exhibition invites people to appreciate the richness and diversity of ASEAN, and how this diversity binds people in the past, present and future of the ASEAN community. The exhibition gathers 20th century artworks spanning the formative decade of the 1960s to the politically charged 90s era and into the present by artists and artisans from all the member countries of ASEAN. The modern artworks on exhibition are drawn from both the collection of the ASEAN Secretariat and various private collections in the region.
Yogyakarta-based contemporary visual artist Hendra ‘Blankon’ Priyadhani was invited to participate in the exhibition, presenting his assemblage sculptures. His works address how history is not just understood, but constructed. Instead of unpacking and re-presenting objects used in his surrealistic sculptures, he sought to create new meanings by splicing, altering, combining and juxtaposing them. The details might seem to get lost in the monochromatic theme, yet it evokes people to look closer and seek each of them on their own. It also serves to tell a cohesive story on each piece.
Assemblage: Reflections on ASEAN runs from 28 July to 31 August 2017 at ASEAN Gallery, ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta. For further information, visit artagendasea.org
