The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta: A Window to a Bygone Era of Java

Experience one of the few five-star hotels located just a jaunt away from ‘Downtown Yogya’.

Originally a private colonial style estate built in 1918, the property changed hands a number of times until a Dutch caretaker turned it into the Pensioner Hotel. On March 30, 2009 the hotel was officially rebranded as The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta and today forms part of Sofitel’s ‘M Gallery’  boutique hotels.

Operating as part of the ‘M Gallery’ means offering a gateway into another world; a spectacular landscape of a bygone era that offers a peek at the lives of past icons. This can be found in the carefully displayed art that pays tribute to the first President of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, who used to live here, and to the presents from the Sultan of Yogyakarta.

The hotel offers bespoke experiences in which to truly experience the nooks and crannies of Yogyakarta, seen from the monocle of a bygone era Equally exciting is a visit to a workshop production of “shadow puppets” that will take you behind the scenes of the Wayang Kulit (Puppet show).

After a day of exploring, you will be tempted to sample Yogyakarta’s legendary street food and humble food stalls scattered literally all over town. But, what would be even better, and fool proof, is to have a little bit of everything presented at your disposal by The Phoenix’ culinary team who source their ingredients from local farmers, or the hotel’s very own hydroponic garden on the roof. What makes the hotel’s culinary venture the more special is its very own culinary journey book, an a la carte menu for its Paprika Restaurant that features both traditional and modern dishes.

Other than its bountiful thematic buffets, the restaurant is also popular for its breakfast spread that offers a variety of Indonesian, Javanese, andinternational breakfasts, that also offer healthy items and vegetarian dishes. Another insider tip: bring home a case of the hotel’s very own Bakpia 1918 to complement the Indonesian art of oleh-oleh giving using Yogyakarta’s favorite sweets.

What will not go unnoticed is the hotel’s great effort in eliminating plastic. Straws and many other items used in the hotel are non-plastic, and you will hard-pressed to find a single plastic bottle offered in the hotel. The Phoenix Hotel is a true experience! Location, atmosphere, F&B, its facilities and the famous Javanese friendliness and service all come together to celebrate a true legend of a hotel and a 5-star luxury experience.
