The Star Diaries is the title of a series of short stories centered around a space traveler named Ijon Tichy. The stories are divided into 12 “voyages” depicting Tichy’s adventures, sometimes dire and leading him into all sorts of unimaginable danger. Tichy finds himself stuck with several versions of himself as a result of his ship encountering a space-time vortex, dressing in disguise on an alien planet to bring an end to its hostile robot population, and visiting a tiny planet, whose inhabitants save living space by frequently storing themselves as ‘atom dust’. Tichy’s twelve voyages are told as a philosophical satire on technology, theology, intelligence, and human nature with a preceding chapter giving an introduction to our hero traveler by (the fictional) Professor Tarantoga, an eccentric xenozoologist, fellow traveler, and inventor. Stanislaw Lem was a Polish writer of science fiction and essays on various subjects, including philosophy, futurology, and literary criticism, with many of his science fiction stories of a satirical and humorous nature.
