dr. HARTONO TANTO, MARS, FISQua – CEO PREMIER SURABAYA HOSPITAL & CORPORATE CEO HOSPITAL OF RAMSAY SIME DARBY HEALTHCARE INDONESIA NETWORKS

It all starts from a willingness to do good deeds.

With its robust positioning as an international healthcare provider and part of the worldwide, 400-strong, private hospital network that is a joint venture between Ramsay Health Care, Australia, and Sime Darby, Malaysia, the company currently consists of 70 hospitals in Australia, 40 hospitals in the UK, 40 hospitals in Paris, and 4 Sime Darby in Malaysia. In Indonesia, the company has spread to Tangerang, Jakarta, and Surabaya, and is the pioneer of the JCI-certified healthcare network in Indonesia where patient safety is the priority.

Premier Bintaro Hospital has built its reputation over many years and is renowned for its Spine and Orthopedic Centers. Premier Jatinegara Hospital for its Neuro and Neurosurgery Centers, and Premier Surabaya Hospital for its Orthopedic Clinic and Stroke Unit, with the network continuing to advance its medical technology and improve services. Each signature center of excellence aims to improve patients’ quality of life and better serve the patients. As one of the longest serving experts with the network, Hartono has been entrusted with the position of Corporate CEO, to synergize all three hospitals.

An adventurous and humble person, Hartono is a Medical Doctor and Master of Hospitality Administration gained from the Post Graduate Hospital Administration program at the Airlangga University, Surabaya. He began his career on the secluded paradise island of Selayar in South Sulawesi where he served as Primary Health Care Doctor for the island’s inhabitants from 1992-1995. He spent his early years as an emergency physician, taking care of various cases in the emergency department. Later, he was promoted to purchasing and logistics manager, where he advanced his knowledge in hospital operations and supply chain management systems. Hartono is one of the oldest members of the first team to serve in the Premier Surabaya Hospital that began in 2006, rebranded several times, the latest being Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, where he now works as Corporate CEO for the three hospitals under the network in Indonesia.

A man with many important roles and responsibilities aside from his current assignments within the network, Hartono regularly works as a visiting lecturer in the Hospital Administration Post Graduate Program at Airlangga University Surabaya, Hasanuddin University Makassar, and Widya Mandala University, is Chairman of the Private Hospital Association (ARSSI) for East Java, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Hospital Association (PERSI) for East Java, Fellow of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (FISQua), Hospital Accreditation Surveyors, and Chairman of North East Java for KARS, along with prestigious Chairman positions in several public hospitals among others.

Hartono invented a supply chain management system to be applied in hospitals using the Excel format that allows everyone to use the formulas as an App, to ensure the smooth operation and management system of the hospitals. He has actively shared his knowledge on many occasions in the field of supply chain management and how to comply with international standards. Time management is key to his busy schedule and various roles, where he always tries to focus and simplify the problems needing to be solved.  The hospitals have always been his second home, and the same goes for the many staff members. This is why he treats the staff as family. Everyone is important according to their role and responsibility. This approach has resulted in a low staff turnover in all three hospitals under his control. “Although we are now in a transition phase of the regeneration of staff members, we recruit and retain the best qualified staff to maintain our reputation,” he adds. A family man, he also loves to read, especially history, “Because if we know history, we can learn from the mistakes so that we won’t repeat the same mistakes.” He also loves to teach others based on his philosophy, “Doing good deeds is easy, what’s hard is not to get envious of others. This is where fairness comes in place. Leaders have to be the role model. And good deeds can spread easily, eventually bringing good luck,” he says.
