United Tractors, a subsidiary of PT Astra International Tbk. (Astra), is the key player in various sectors and industries in Indonesia through its six business pillars, Construction Machinery, Mining Contracting, Coal Mining, Gold Mining, Construction, and Energy.
Established in 1989, United Tractors (UT) had already become the leading and largest heavy equipment distributor in Indonesia. As the sole distributor of Komatsu, UD Trucks, Scania, Bomag and Tadano products, providing heavy equipment, trucks, cranes and buses for use in the mining, plantation, construction and forestry sectors as well as for material handling and transportation. The Construction Machinery business that UT carried out over time was accompanied by several other sectors including mining contractors as well as power plants.
UT’s Mining Contractor business is run through PT Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA), a specialist contractor that provides comprehensive mining services to mine owners and offers mining services throughout the production and expansion stages from mine design, exploration, extraction, hauling, barging, commodity transportation as well as reclamation and revegetation. Its operational activities are currently supported by several subsidiaries, namely PT Kalimantan Prima Persada (KPP) and PT Pama Indo Mining (PIM).
United Tractors runs a coal mining concession business through its subsidiary, PT Tuah Turangga Agung (“Turangga Resources”), producing thermal and coking coal. TTA is optimizing coal production from the PT Asmin Bara Bronang (ABB) mine, the PT Telen Orbit Prima (TOP) mine, and the PT Suprabari Mapanindo Mineral mine. Recently, as coal use is doomed to decline in support of sustainability and a greener future, UT has established the New and Renewable Energy (EBT) business as one of its corporate transition strategies in the energy sector. The development of Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) technology by the company’s subsidiary, PT Energia Prima Nusantara or EPN resulted in the installation of solar PV in a number of companies in the UT and Astra groups, reaching 1.2MWp. By the end of 2022, it is targeted that there will be an additional 10MWp of new installations and this will increase in the following year.
UT also carried out development studies on several Hydro Power Plant projects with business partners who have a reputation and experience in the field of Hydro Power Plants (PLTA targeted in the Sumatra and Sulawesi areas, each with a capacity of more than 10MW. Smaller capacities 0.5 MW MiniHydros (PLTM) were already built in Central Java and Besai Kemu in Lampung. Apart from that, the company is also developing several other PLTM projects with a total potential of more than 18MW in the Sumatra area alone. UT is also actively conducting studies, reviews and MoUs to develop other types of renewable energy such as Floating Solar PV, Wind Power Plants (PLTB), Hybrid Solar PV and Battery Storage, and Waste to Energy.

The gold mining business is run by PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR), in which United Tractors owns a 95% stake. PTAR operates the Martabe gold mine located in the South Tapanuli area of North Sumatra province with an operational area of 479 hectares. Construction of the Martabe gold mine began in 2008 and production began in 2012. In 2004, UT was appointed as the sole distributor of Scania in Indonesia, marking the public transportation sector as one of its playgrounds. UT’s biggest Scania armada can be seen running through Jakarta’s streets as a part of TransJakarta’s integrated public transportation system.
In full support of the country’s 2060 Net Zero Emission target, UT has recently launched electric-based heavy machineries such as the New 20 Tonne Class Electric Excavator Komatsu PC200, a promising follow up to Komatsu’s preceding lineup of green heavy machineries such as the 13-20 Tonne Class Wired Electric Excavator, the Mini Excavator Battery Electric in 2020, and 2022’s hybrid 30 Tonne Class HB365-1.
