Artists Clasutta, Zita Nuella, dan Tusita Mangalani hold their first exhibition, titled Ad Maiora on Friday, 12 July 2024 at D Gallerie, South Jakarta. Ad Maiora presents 3 individual series of paintings. Using the medium of oil, charcoal, acrylic, beads, and embroidery, this exhibition does not only feature a variety of media exploration on canvas, but also extends intimate perspectives of each artist. From Clasutta’s personal observation on workplace routine, to Zita Nuella’s introspective musings on loneliness, to Tusita Mangalani’s way of dealing with intrusive thoughts – every color and brush stroke forms a layer of visual narratives of grandeur, which is formed through accumulation of little things, such as daily experiences.
According to Clasutta, the visual narrative aligns with the idea behind the name Ad Maiora, “We are moved by the phrase ‘Ad Maiora Natus Sum’ which translates into ‘we are born to aim for greater things’. As newcomers, we are aware that our big aspirations in the art must be accompanied by persistence. In the past year, we have learnt to overcome our differences and nurture our professional skills from small habits that we’ve worked and improved consistently.”
Ad Maiora serves as the culmination of their year-long journey in the seventh AMP – Atreyu Moniaga Project’s Mixed Feelings artist incubation program. It also marks a decade of AMP as an independent initiative with a mission to support young artists entering the arts and creative scene in Jakarta. “As humans, we tend to be complacent and are afraid to have big ambitions because we feel like we are not good enough,” said Atreyu Moniaga as AMP’s Founder and Mentor. He adds, “I was reminded of the way true success is not solely measured by artistic prowess. Success is also determined by the courage to embrace personal growth – which means that we have to step out of our comfort zone and learn continuously to improve ourselves.”
The incubation process and exhibition of Atreyu Moniaga Project: Mixed Feelings – Ad Maiora also involves Nin Djani, Wilhemus Willy, Venerdi Handoyo, and Joshua Agustinus Andrias as collaborators. The exhibition opening consists of remarks and tour sessions with the artists alongside hosts Christie Leonardi, Jayne Oentoro, Mandy CJ, Mbetand, Nikolas Adia, Raihan Prabowo, Rizkyamom, Shuxxi, and Vicky Angkasa. As part of the public programs, there will be an Artist Talk scheduled on Sunday, 21 July 2024.
The exhibition Ad Maiora will run for three weeks from 13 July to 1 August 2024. The exhibition is open to the public and accessible for free, with no gallery entry charge.
