Founded in 1994 by Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa (a.k.a. Gus Rai), Hatten Wines holds the distinction of being Bali’s first winery. Located in the picturesque region of North Bali, Hatten Wines has become a symbol of innovation and resilience in the world of viticulture.
Pak Gus Rai’s family originally hails from arak (traditional coconut wine) and rice wine making. The boom of the Sanur area as government-sponsored tourism areas in the 60’s created an influx of foreign tourists with their own drinking culture. Pak Gus Rai saw an opportunity to introduce arak Bali as well as a new market of wine, a drink which was foreign to Balinese but would definitely make the guests feel at home. He created his own -original Bali- Rosé which gave life to Hatten Wines’ repertoire of whites, reds, and the recent sparkling and dessert wines.
Annually, Hatten’s team handles 1000 tonnes of grapes in their wine production factory in Sanur, Bali. Led by oenologist James Kalleske from down under, their method combines contemporary winemaking techniques with traditional French methods to maintain consistent style and quality. The grapes used for the wine come from both domestic and overseas vineyards, mainly in Southern Australia valley areas where pak Gus Rai refined his winemaking flair. Their distinctive yet refined wines embody Bali’s unique tropical terroir, and Hatten Wines takes pride in being the island’s sole producer of méthode-traditionnelle sparkling wines and solera-aged fortified wines.
Hatten Wines owns a 60 hectare vineyard complex located between the scenic villages of Seririt and Sanggalangit on Bali’s northern coast. The fertile volcanic soil helps the three annual growth cycles, and the ocean breeze assists in moderating the hot and humid climate. With Thomas Hadiwibowo as the vineyard manager, Hatten Wines conduct the island’s most extensive viticultural research and development program, testing over 50 different international grape varieties. In addition to managing their own vineyards, Hatten Wines also collaborate with local farmers and now grow ten grape varieties, ranging from Bali’s native Muscat St. Vallier to esteemed varieties like Syrah. Bali’s tropical climate presents unique challenges and opportunities for winemaking. Unlike traditional wine regions, Bali’s vineyards benefit from a consistently hot and humid climate, allowing the vines to produce fruit year-round. This results in non-vintage wines that capture the essence of Bali’s unique terroir.
Under the banner of PT Hatten Bali Tbk., Hatten Wines also develop other brands such as TWO Islands, TWO Islands Reserve, Dragonfly as well as Dewi Sri. Hatten Wines’ diverse range of wines has garnered them international acclaim and brought them awards. From the heritage grape variety Alphonse Lavallée to international varieties, the winery produces ten distinct wines. These include the popular rosé, which was the first product launched by Hatten Wines. Hatten Wines stands as a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of Balinese winemakers. The Cellardoor
Hatten Wines’ The Cellardoor Sanur is open daily, offering special-priced comparative or sweet lover tastings at the bar. Drop by or arrange a private tasting to explore their range of Balinese white, rosé, red, and sparkling wines. The Cellardoor also offers take-home orders, along with a selection of Schott Zwiesel glassware, gourmet goods, and contemporary homeware from their lifestyle boutique. Additionally, tastings and take-away orders of TWO Islands, Hatten Wines’ sister brand of modern Australian wines made in Bali, are available.
