The CMA CGM Foundation has partnered with Happy Hearts Indonesia to renovate two schools in Surabaya. The first school, SMP Tri Guna Bhakti, was reopened on November 20th, 2024, ready to welcome over 560 students. The extensive renovation included fixing seven classrooms, a teacher’s room, and five restrooms, as well as transforming a 40-foot container into a new library and adding a new classroom block to increase capacity.
The second school is scheduled for renovation in 2025, bringing the total number of students benefiting from this partnership to 780. These renovations go beyond enhancing the learning environment—they also use recycled materials and reduce carbon emissions, showcasing a commitment to both the community and the environment.
Sylvia Beiwinkler, CEO of Happy Hearts Indonesia, emphasized the significance of these improvements, stating, “This renovation is about providing children with a safe and inspiring place to learn and grow. We’re deeply grateful to the CMA CGM Foundation for their commitment to education and sustainability.” Michel Azrak, President Director of CMA CGM Indonesia, added, “With the CMA CGM Foundation, we support programs that improve access to education for all.”
CMA CGM Foundation staff played a crucial role in the project. In October 2024, 15 staff members helped paint the new library container, and their involvement will continue with activities like reading sessions and sports events. The renovation has resulted in significant social and environmental benefits, recycling 1.7 tons of plastic and reducing carbon emissions by 3.9 tons, providing better educational facilities for 560 students.
Moving forward, a three-year training program for teachers and staff will focus on financial and management skills to improve teaching quality and ensure school sustainability. This initiative is expected to positively impact over 3,500 community members in the coming years, highlighting the dedication of CMA CGM Foundation and Happy Hearts Indonesia to education and a brighter future.
