Batavia PIK, in collaboration with renowned director and scriptwriter Mhyajo, presents “Batavia Tales”, a musical performance set against the historical backdrop of 19th-century Batavia. Crafted as a tetralogy of interconnected stories, this series brings to life unique tales inspired by the diverse dynamics of colonial-era society. Open to the public free of charge, the performance will be held regularly every Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 PM WIB, starting April 19, 2025, at the Alun-Alun Batavia PIK.
As part of the long weekend celebrations, Batavia PIK also features the dazzling Water Fountain Show along Jembatan Kota Intan. Visitors can enjoy the mesmerizing display of dancing fountains choreographed to music and illuminated with vibrant lights. Perfectly timed to set the stage for “Batavia Tales,” the fountain show provides an unforgettable visual experience, especially at night, as it enhances the iconic old-town atmosphere.
Batavia Tales marks the beginning of Batavia PIK’s journey as a hub for preserving Indonesian art and culture while celebrating diversity. According to Anwar Salim, Director of Operating Units Amantara, “PIK has become one of Jakarta’s premier tourist destinations, known for its culinary offerings. Through Batavia Tales, we aim to introduce PIK as a cultural destination, enriching the visitor experience with high-quality entertainment accessible to all.”
The tetralogy features four episodes showcasing the lives of eight fictional characters inspired by society between 1890 and 1910, during the Dutch colonial era. Each episode explores themes of love, friendship, struggle, and adventure, offering fresh perspectives through dynamic storytelling. The debut episode, “The Whispers of Batavia,” portrays the love story of Ahmad Rahman Marzuki, a scholar of Aceh-Jazirah descent, and Mei Lian Kang, a young Chinese-Indonesian woman navigating societal opposition and ethnic segregation under colonial rule.
Rich cultural and historical elements are woven into every scene, supported by symbols such as batik, rijsttafel, and barongan, representing the identity and cultural fusion of the archipelago. The performance’s immersive atmosphere is enhanced by harmonious musical arrangements and choreography, breathing life into every moment. Subsequent episodes delve deeper into folklore, nationalism, and maritime adventures, presenting captivating visuals and artistic finesse.
Through Batavia Tales and the Water Fountain Show, Batavia PIK reimagines history with a fresh and modern approach, offering audiences across generations the chance to connect with Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Together, these attractions create a vibrant and unforgettable family-friendly entertainment experience.
