Macau’s history and creativity find a new home at the Grand Lisboa Palace Art Gallery, an artistic and cultural hub by SJM Resorts. Rooted in the city’s rich heritage, this vibrant space is set to redefine Macau’s cultural landscape with immersive exhibitions and dynamic storytelling.
The grand opening kicked off with notable figures celebrating Macau’s artistic journey, fronted by Mr. Ho Hau Wah, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Ms. Bai Bing, Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR among other distinguished guests, as well as representatives from the arts and culture sector, chambers of commerce, tourism industry, and the press.
Situated on the Level 2 of Grand Lisboa Palace, the inaugural exhibition, The Lisboa, Stories of Macau, is a love letter to the city, blending personal narratives, iconic landmarks, and innovative interactive experiences that let visitors step through time. Expect scale models, virtual projections, AI-powered voice recognition, and motion-sensitive installations that bring history to life. This exhibition pays tribute to Macau’s rich cultural tapestry, shaped by centuries of East-West exchange since the Ming and Qing dynasties.
From legendary rickshaw drivers to modern creatives, The Lisboa, Stories of Macau presents a multidimensional portrait of the city’s evolution. Eight thematic zones—spanning heritage sites, bustling streets, and artistic traditions—offer a curated exploration of Macau’s cultural fabric. The centerpiece? A magnificent golden dragon boat, embodying the spirit of maritime tales and local folklore.
Additionally, an interactive floor map within the main exhibition area unveils insights into more than 30 of Macau’s iconic landmarks and 50 fascinating, lesser-known historical anecdotes, inviting visitors to scan and uncover the city’s multifaceted cultural charm. But beyond exhibitions, the Art Gallery features The Lisboa Collection, an ongoing showcase of themed displays. The debut collection, Chinese Treasure: Qing Dynasty Court Art, highlights rare imperial artifacts, including an opulent lacquered throne and exquisite jade craftsmanship. To bring Macau’s culture further from the gallery walls, a souvenir shop offers locally crafted design pieces and TASCHEN’s global art volumes covering fashion, design, and travel.
The Gallery also includes a dedicated art and creative space that will be open to artists and cultural organisations worldwide, hosting diverse exhibitions and artistic programmes. This space will serve as a lively stage for creative expression and international collaboration.
Through its immersive storytelling and innovative curation, The Lisboa, Stories of Macau presents a vivid and engaging portrayal of Macau’s cultural evolution, allowing visitors to experience its rich heritage from multiple perspectives. The exhibition fosters a deeper connection between residents and their hometown’s cultural heritage while inspiring the younger generation to take pride in and carry forward its traditions. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for an inspiring day out, this gallery is a must-visit destination to experience Macau’s fusion of tradition and innovation.
