In celebration of Jakarta’s 498th anniversary, Mercure Jakarta Sabang brought Betawi culture to center stage with Betawi Day. It’s a one-day cultural celebration bursting with color, tradition, and family-friendly festivities that embraced the heart and soul of the capital.
Held in a vibrant Betawi-style setting, the event blended entertainment, education, and cultural heritage, inviting both locals and international guests to step into the richness of Jakarta’s native identity. The highlight? A lavish Betawi-themed buffet at Clovia Restaurant, featuring nostalgic favorites such as Pecak Gurame, Nasi Ulam, traditional Jakarta cookies, and the iconic Bir Pletok, making them a tribute to the culinary stories of old Batavia.
The day unfolded with a spirited lineup of experiences: from a scenic ride aboard the Transjakarta City Tour Bus, to hands-on batik workshops, a craft bazaar, and a fun cooking class at the hotel’s Fresh Market, where participants decorated their own Mini Roti Buaya, a classic Betawi symbol. Little dancers also had their moment, learning the graceful moves of Betawi traditional dance under the guidance of professional instructors.
But it was the charming Abang None Cilik competition that stole the spotlight. Dressed in full traditional attire, young participants dazzled with confidence, creativity, and cultural knowledge. Hosted by finalists from Abang None Jakarta Pusat 2024 and judged by cultural figures including Karina Syahna and Novi Shara Shainia, the event celebrated a new generation proud of their roots.
Winners took home cash prizes and exclusive stay vouchers from Mercure Jakarta Sabang, an acknowledgment of their vibrant spirit in preserving local culture.
“Betawi Day is more than a celebration. It’s a space where Jakarta’s youth can grow with identity and pride,” shared Winaryo Wasdi, Hotel Manager of Mercure Jakarta Sabang.
Supported by Sudin Parekraf Jakarta Pusat, Transjakarta, and Wastra Kreatif, the event is part of Mercure’s global Discover Local campaign, affirming the brand’s passion for spotlighting local heritage in every guest experience.
