Along with its evolution into a gathering place, the opening of Cikini 82 marks a new chapter in the city’s historical building preservation.
Located in Jakarta’s strategic Menteng district, Cikini 82 is a historical building that has quietly borne witness to key phases of Indonesia’s transformation. Once a colonial residence for the elite, and later a post-independence diplomatic house and political meeting place, the space embodies a legacy steeped in intellectual, cultural, and cross-national exchange.
While its architectural richness and historical value endured, for years, the building remained closed to the public. Yet, the culmination is a meticulous restoration that breathes new life and purpose into its walls. Under the stewardship of owner Lukas Budiono, the rehabilitation of Cikini 82 has been handled with heartfelt care. Original architectural elements and the building’s historical ambiance have been preserved, while new functions have been thoughtfully introduced to transform it into a vibrant public space.
Cikini 82’s main building is more than a physical preservation—it is a revival of meaning. The Main Hall will become an ideal canvas for all sorts of events. The tasteful wooden ceiling and classic tiled floor act as a frame to the equally beautiful walls and windows. Accompanying the main building are the East and West Pavilions. Tailored for different purposes, the East Pavillion houses two sizable bedrooms complete with their own living room and terrace, while the West Pavillion’s interior is styled after a train compartment, a tasteful nod to the neighboring Cikini Train Station. The West Pavillion acts as an additional space to compliment the Main Hall with a professional kitchen to support the FnB features of the whole complex.
Cikini 82 represents a vision of openness: an egalitarian cultural environment brimming with possibility. The space, now a shared home, welcomes art, cuisine, community discussions, and cultural festivities under one elegant roof. It doesn’t merely house history; it activates it. With a series of celebrations dubbed Pusparagam, Cikini 82 has solidified its new role as a living cultural hub—one that honors its past while forging a future of connection and creativity in the heart of the city.
