The UT Group’s 2025 journalist workshop explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping editorial work.
Rather than viewing AI as a threat, the discussion framed it as a collaborative tool that can support journalists in research, content generation, and streamlining repetitive tasks. Still, the speakers emphasized that human judgment remains essential. AI might assist with speed and scale, but it can’t replace the ethical reasoning, contextual sensitivity, and creative intuition that define quality journalism.
The whole event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Nezar Patria, and inaugurated by the Director of Corporate Human Capital, Communication and Sustainability at UT, Ari Sutrisno. Speakers in the workshop include IT expert, Onno W. Purbo and Digital Forensic specialist, Ruby Alamsyah, who took participants to reflect on the evolving skill set required in newsrooms. Prompt engineering, data literacy, and the ability to critically assess AI outputs are becoming part of the editorial toolkit. There was also a strong call for transparency and accountability when using AI-generated content, especially in maintaining trust with readers.
Onno W. Purbo also recommended several locally developed AI tools and information banks such as ComfyUI and Intech Press, while Ruby Alamsyah explained how open source AI can also become a source of data leak under careless use—especially while inputting prompts. Therefore, it’s relatively safer to use offline AI tools, albeit not completely hack proof.
The workshop closed with a forward-looking message: innovation should be embraced, but not at the expense of journalistic integrity. UT Group aims to foster a newsroom culture that’s both technologically agile and deeply rooted in editorial values.
Meanwhile, the corporate update session featured representatives from various subsidiaries within the UT Group, including Ari Setiyawan and Sara K. Loebis from PT United Tractors Tbk; Boy G.
