Jakarta’s cultural heartbeat grows louder with the return of Batavia Tales, now entering its third chapter: The Echoes of Batavia. Staged at Alun-Alun Batavia PIK every Saturday and Sunday at 17:17 WIB, this immersive performance invites audiences to step into the soul of old Batavia, where romance, rebellion, and resilience intertwine.
Presented by Batavia PIK as part of its ongoing mission to celebrate and preserve Indonesian heritage, Batavia Tales is a living tribute to the stories that shaped the archipelago. With each episode, the series reimagines historical narratives through a modern lens, blending traditional music, batik symbolism, and folk legends into a theatrical experience that resonates across generations.
Episode 3 dives into the late 19th-century colonial era, where tension simmers behind the walls of Batavia. The story follows Ana Maria Titale, I Wayan Eka, and a band of six daring allies as they risk everything to rescue Suminah, a freedom fighter captured during the Cilegon uprising. Their journey unfolds in shadowed alleyways and whispered secrets, as the feared KNIL troops—known as Londo Ireng—hunt for resistance voices.
Written and directed by mhyajo, the production brings emotional depth and cinematic staging to life. “Batavia isn’t just a backdrop,” he shares. “It’s a living space filled with love, conflict, and hope. Every character carries echoes of the past that still speak to us today.”
With no admission fee and a mission to make culture accessible, The Echoes of Batavia is a must-see for anyone seeking connection through art. Whether you’re a history buff, a theater lover, or simply curious about Jakarta’s evolving cultural scene, this performance promises to stir hearts and spark conversations.
