EU-ASEAN SCHOLARSHIPS INFORMATION DAY 2025 PROMOTES STUDY OPPORTUNITIES IN EUROPE

The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to ASEAN hosted the EU-ASEAN Scholarships Information Day 2025 on 4 October at Catur Dharma Hall, Menara Astra Building, Jakarta. This hybrid event aimed to strengthen academic cooperation with ASEAN and promote study opportunities in Europe for students and scholars across Southeast Asia.

The event was officiated by H.E. Sujiro Seam, EU Ambassador to ASEAN, and Kamal Mamat, Assistant Director/Head of the Education, Youth and Sports Division at the ASEAN Secretariat. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, also delivered pre-recorded remarks, emphasizing the role of education and mobility in creating globally connected and regionally grounded leaders.

Participants received a comprehensive overview of scholarship programmes offered by institutions in both ASEAN and the EU. As part of the EU-ASEAN Plan of Action, 21 initiatives focus on education. Attendees joined thematic sessions, explored a dedicated scholarship exhibition, and consulted directly with programme alumni. The event drew over 800 participants, including students, university representatives, and education stakeholders, both offline and online.

This event reflects the European Union’s commitment to enhancing people-to-people connectivity between the EU and ASEAN, prioritizing education and research to foster mutual understanding and address global challenges,” said H.E. Sujiro Seam. He encouraged ASEAN students and scholars to explore joint degree programs and opportunities in digital, green, and blue jobs for a sustainable economy and environment.

Since 2014, the EU-funded Erasmus+ programme has supported over 15,000 ASEAN students and scholars in pursuing short-term study, master’s degrees, teaching, and training opportunities in Europe. In return, 7,500 European students and scholars have participated in exchanges across ASEAN. EU Member States also offer a wide range of additional scholarships.

In research, the EU awarded 90 grants under Horizon Europe between 2021 and 2024, supporting 109 institutions across ASEAN with €10.6 million. Education and research remain central to the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, reaffirming their role as pillars of EU-ASEAN cooperation.
