The notable Italian writer, journalist and children’s literature author, Gianni Rodari, whose books have been translated into many languages and famous for his highly imaginative tales. Rodari is considered among the most influential authors of children’s literature of the 20th century. He was the only Italian writer to have won the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Prize in 1970, one of the most important international awards relating to children’s literature.

As the year 2020 marked the centennial of the birth of Rodari, the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta, presented a webinar dedicated to Rodari, entitled “A sbagliare le storie”: Una fantasia infinita, meaning “To mistake stories”: an infinite fantasy, discussion on the importance of the literature as a pedagogical tool for children’s education. The webinar was held on March 17, 2021 took place at the exhibition venue display of illustrations for Gianni Rodari at the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta. Participating in the webinar were Maria Battaglia (Director of Italian Cultural Institute Jakarta), Professor Pino Boero (previously professor of children’s literature and reading pedagogy at University of Genoa), Itje Chodidjah (Indonesian independent educator) and Kak Aio (Indonesian story teller and co-founder of Komunitas Ayo Dongeng Indonesia). On the webinar, Professor Boero explained the story of life and significant works of Rodari which have inspired others and became a reference point for people involved in reading education and children’s literature until today. Ibu Itje highlighted the importance of delivering the values of life through storytelling, which can support the building of children’s character from a young age. She mentioned, “Children learned from fantasy, children learned about realities and values of life from stories. Through good stories, children will learn a lot.” She added, “I’m impressed with Rodari’s quote, Reality can be entered through the main door or it can be slipped into through a window, which is much more fun.” At the end of the webinar, Kak Aio mentioned, “Basically in children’s world it is always about playing, this includes playing with stories and he closed the webinar with storytelling from Rodari’s work titled “To mistakes stories” in Bahasa.
