The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, commonly known as the ACL, is one of the key ligaments that helps stabilize the knee joint as it connects the thighbone to the shinbone. It is most commonly torn during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction — such as basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

Dr. Jeffry specializes in adult hip and knee reconstruction in the areas of trauma and sports and graduated from Brawijaya and Airlangga Universities. He is a Consultant for the Indonesian College of Orthopedics and Traumatology, a member of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia for the East Java province, and is directly involved with athletes from various sports. Common cases that require his specialist help are degenerative diseases in elderly patients, however sports are still the main area.  He explains, “Usually sports injuries are caused by several factors, such as the weekend warrior mentality where those who do sports only occasionally or as part of lifestyle find injuries occur when the body is not fully ready for the exercise. The next factor is having the wrong technique, for example those who don’t wear proper shoes or equipment according to activity being carried out. Finally, and perhaps surprisingly, overtraining. With minor injuries, the treatment generally calls for rest, ice, compression, elevation (the RICE method) for a week that helps to reduce swelling, ease pain, and speed up healing. “

With extreme injuries, such as in the case of pop signs and swelling, the injury needs to be treated carefully. A week after the swelling is gone, the patient needs to have an MRI examination. Dr. Jeffrey explains, “The ACL is broken due to sudden movement on the knee, where the body continues to twist, causing the foot to bend inwards. The ACL is one of the four stabilizing ligaments of the knee. If it’s broken, the knee will not be in stable condition when it rotates. This can erode the bone, so it must be reconstructed immediately. If not immediately reconstructed, within 5-10 years it will be impossible for reconstruction, instead the patient will need to have a joint or knee replacement.”

In the case of degenerative diseases in the elderly, he explains, “Some people call it Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease or wear and tear arthritis. The condition is usually caused by being overweight which can lead to joint pain, stiffness, difficulty to climb the stairs, and in the worst case patients have difficulty to walk because the legs form an O or X shape.”

Dr. Jeffrey adds, “The ACL repair package offered by Premier Surabaya requires minimally invasive surgery tools and cutting-edge technology at a very affordable price. Along with the demand for a healthy lifestyle and passion for sports, patients with injuries or with degenerative problems can have the surgery in one to three days maximum. However, this condition will vary depending on each individual patient, from procedures of pre-surgery, to surgery and post-surgery. A control visit will be arranged a week after, to follow up with gradual medical rehabilitation.”
