The Colours of Indonesia (TCOI) 2024 exhibition at Senayan City became the launching point for Serip’s first collaboration with Indonesian artist, Sammy Hendramianto Syamsulhadi dubbed the Anthurium.

Founded in 1961, the Portuguese brand is known for creating exciting and beautifully crafted chandeliers and sculptures inspired by nature. This family-owned company has a rich heritage spanning three generations, blending traditional craftsmanship with innovative design to create stunning, organic lighting sculptures. Serip’s journey began with a focus on ornate lighting, utilizing materials like ceramics, porcelain, and brass. Over the decades, the company evolved, embracing new materials and techniques. The 1980s marked a significant shift as Serip began developing its own glass and incorporating Italian glass techniques, which added a new dimension to their handmade creations.

Serip has always employed master artisans who use ancestral techniques to create bespoke lighting solutions. This dedication to handcrafting ensures that each product is not only a functional lighting fixture but also a work of art. For the first time since their voyage around the archipelago, Serip teamed up with national artist and interior designer Sammy Hendramianto Syamsulhadi to create a chandelier inspired by the anthurium plant, a species close to Indonesian daily life yet exuding its own elegant charm.

The Anthurium is made with cast bronze combined with crystal clear glass, resulting in a chandelier that illuminates the Sunset at Batujimbar Bathroom at their inaugural display at TCOI 2024. With a length of 3 meters and a weight of around 100 kilograms, the process of making the Anthurium chandelier begins with sand-casting the leaves of the original anthurium plant and creating detailed molds for the premium glass and bronze elements. The chandelier’s main structure is also crafted using a sand molding technique from real tree trunks, aligning with Serip’s design philosophy of transforming natural elements into beautiful works of art. The bronze build is suitable for Indonesia’s tropical and humid climate as it’s made with rust proof noble material.

The Anthurium, not unlike Serip’s other collections, make use of illumination technique in which the glass leaves act as the indirect source of light from a bright and neutral colored LED light positioned at the base of each one of them. This produces ambient lighting that, while bright, not glaring. It is one of the features that makes Serip chandeliers suitable for almost any room in the house including dining room, library, semi-private room, or even bathroom as demonstrated in Serip’s TCOI Summer Vacation Home display.

Serip’s collaborator, Sammy, expressed his enthusiasm in designing the Anthurium chandelier. With a relatively short 8 months development time, Sammy and Serip’s team miraculously fulfilled the conceptual process within the first month. An easy challenge for him to overcome as it’s been his aspiration to collaborate with Serip ever since he saw one of Serip’s displays at Maison & Objet exhibition in Singapore in 2015. In TCOI 2016, Sammy also included Serip’s Aqua collection in his “The Songket Boutique” showcase. Following the chandelier, Sammy is currently working on the development of other items for the Anthurium collection such as wall lamp, standing lamp and table lamp, all are expected to be finished early next year.

As Serip continues to innovate, their focus remains on blending the past with the future. By staying true to their roots while embracing new technologies and design trends, Serip ensures that their lighting sculptures will continue to illuminate spaces and inspire awe for generations to come.
