Museum MACAN invites families and children to experience a unique celebration of imagination and creativity at Museum MACAN children’s art space, Ulik Ulak Alik (Infinite Play). Open to the public from 30 November 2024 and run through 6 April 2025, this interactive playground offers a world of discovery and fun for visitors of all ages, to explore, play, and learn together.

In partnership with Playo, a dynamic Jakarta-based creative studio featuring Adil Alba, Genie Anggita, Gabriela Alinda, and Elsadira Suciana, the art space is rooted in the themes of ‘form, function, and fiasco’. Ulik Ulak Alik is designed as a vibrant, multi-sensory playground, featuring modular objects of various shapes and sizes. Visitors can explore diverse interpretations—some focusing on shapes, colors, and textures, others using the objects as tools or technologies, and many embracing the unpredictability and fun of free play.
In developing Ulik Ulak Alik, Playo collaborated with ten Indonesia material designers, including Adhi Nugraha Design Studio, Bell Living Lab, Conture Concrete Lab, Daur Goods, Denny Priyatna, HomLab, Mortier, MYCL, Natakraf, and Rambah Runtah, in which transforming everyday waste and bio-materials into a dynamic play space, incorporating textile waste, bio-plastic, eggshell, cow dung compost, mushroom compost, mycelium leather, fruit & vegetable leather, flower leather, corn husk paper, bottle cap recycled plastic, and sponge waste. Visitors can engage their senses by touching, seeing, and smelling the materials, discovering their potential in fun and unexpected ways. A material library provides deeper insights into the stories behind these materials and their creation.

Challenging traditional notions of safety in play, Ulik Ulak Alik introduces elements of risks such as falls, stumbles, or objects breaking to foster a more authentic and stimulating play experience. Visitors are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone, embrace uncertainty, and celebrate the joy of playing in a fun and sustainable way.
