
On 27 September 2018 at @Grandkemang Jakarta, Yayasan Design+Art Indonesia (Indonesia Design+Art Foundation) in cooperation with Indonesia Creative Economy Agency (BEKRAF) announced the participation of Indonesia in the Venice Art Biennale 2019. The Indonesia Pavillion, which will utilize a 340m2 art space, is going to be represented by two teams of collaborating artists which were selected from all over the country by an board of jury of experienced art and culture intellectuals which consists of Dolorosa Sinaga, Bambang Sugiharto, Jim Supangkat, Nirwan Dewanto and St. Sunardi. The two teams’ art proposals were selected out of other 8 through several criteria which are main idea and innovation, compatibility and coherency, feasibility and elements comprehensiveness.

The first team, fronted by Asmudjo Jono Irianto as curator, Yacobus Ari Respati, Handiwirman Saputra and Syagini Ratna Wulan, proposed “Akal Tak Sekali Datang, Runding Tak Sekali Tiba”. A project conferring a three-part coherent artwork which comments, reviews and criticises on a number of issues regarding today’s contemporary art practise and discourse. The presentation will also involve viewers so they can actively participate in discussions through on site artworks.

The second but not last team consists of Team TROMARAMA comprising of Feby Babyrose, Ruddy Hatumena and Herbert Hans, curator Bob Edrian Triadi and Riar Rizaldi and Natasha Gabriella Tontey. They raise the latest problems regarding post-internet culture and its fast moving production, distribution and circulation. The elements of the artwork both directly and deliberately invite viewers to enter a analytical dialogue on present time’s subjective authority of human identity which always in attendance almost full time within the world wide web.

The board of jury also offer acknowledgement to the participants whose proposals didn’t make it through the whole meticulous process of selection. The themes brought up possess strong relevance to nowadays issues and are capable of opening new chances to evaluate social problems and their connections with internet based communication sovereignty. BEKRAF, acting as facilitators, also provides assistance and space so that the ideas will be able to take shape and participate in future exhibitions.
