Digital transformation has led to a hybrid lifestyle, increasing demand for comprehensive home design. Open-concept, single-story layouts that combine working, living, dining, and kitchen areas are now preferred. As home use evolves rapidly, IKEA Indonesia offers tailored solutions to meet daily needs.

Similar changes are evident in public spaces. A seating area once intended for one person evolves as people wait longer, move around, and transform it into a gathering spot. The space retains its original purpose while adapting to new demands. As additional needs arise, clutter can accumulate.

“What we see is not just spaces changing functionality, but multiple needs emerging simultaneously. In this context, interiors is no longer sufficient for just one purpose; it must be able to accommodate changes with no hassle adjustments or disturbing the flow of a space,” said Muhammad Yusuf Attorik, Interior Design Leader, IKEA Indonesia, at the ARCH:ID 2026 architecture forum.

Aside from limited of space, the purposes also change. In most cases, interiors with overly specific arrangements struggle to accommodate multiple needs. Homes with dedicated zones, for example, a dining room that seems spacious, can feel crowded when used for work and childcare. A tidy seating area can lose its flow when people change positions for new or additional function, such as work or other activities.

IKEA Indonesia sees the home as a place where a system continuously adapts. Because its functionality varies from the morning to those in the evening, and space usage during the week differs from that on the weekend, a space must adapt to these changes without being rearranged constantly.

“Design isn’t about making a space always look neat or perfect, no matter what the activities are. What’s more important is how to maximize the space, even when used for various purposes every day,” concluded Torik.

For IKEA Indonesia, space will constantly change with its users. Therefore, the design needs to be flexible enough to accommodate these changes, without losing its basic function in everyday use.
